Low Voltage Transformers: Your Complete Installation and Usage Guide

A low voltage transformer is an apparatus that uses the principle of electromagnetic induction to alter the levels of voltage, and its applications can be grouped into five methods, including voltage transformation, current transformation, impedance transformation, isolation, and voltage stabilization. Low voltage transformers are rated at less than 600 V and tend to be used in various electrical equipment and radio circuits used in applications such as stepping up or down in voltage, impedance matching, and providing safety isolation.

♦The low voltage transformers performance depends on the environment at which they are put in place. The most important requirements are as follows;

♦Temperature: the ambient temperature should range within -5°C and + 40°C, and its daily average should not be more than +35°C;

♦Altitude: the altitude of the site for installation must not exceed 2000 meters;

♦Humidity: at + 40 °C, the atmosphere humidity should be below 50%;

♦Vibration and Shock: do not install in environments with much vibration or shock;

♦Explosion Hazard: do not put in an environment where an explosion might occur.

Based on several aspects, low voltage transformers can be classified:

Phase Classification:

 Single-Phase Transformer

Characteristics

Used for residential and small commercial power applications for low power applications.

It consists of a simple structure; usually it has one core and two windings.

Principle: Single-phase transformers operate on the electromagnetic induction principle. The primary winding contains an alternating current, which generates an alternating magnetic field. It induces a voltage in the secondary winding. They are mainly employed to step up or step down a specific supply of voltage, ensuring equipment operates at the required level of voltage.

 Three-Phase Transformer

Characteristics:To be used in the industries and large commercial establishments where they are supposed to carry high power loads, this type of transformer is required. Most efficient and able to distribute loads.

Principle:Three similar single-phase transformers are connected either in star (Y) or delta (Δ) configuration. Utilising three-phase currents that have phase differences, the three-phase transformer distributes the loads effectively, ensuring a more stable and reliable power supply.

Usage Classification:

 Control Transformer

Characteristics: Specifically designed for voltage regulation in control circuits.

Extensively used in industrial automation equipment and control systems.

Principle: Control transformers provide a regulated low-voltage supply; hence the control circuit is ensured to be within a certain permissible safe range of voltage. It electrically isolates the supply from the load and also protects control devices against overvoltages and short circuits.

 Isolation Transformer

Characteristics: Used for isolation of the input and output circuits for safety and protection. They are highly applied to medical appliances and other sensitive electronic instruments.

Theory: The isolation transformers provide electrical isolation between the input and output, which eradicates noise and interference almost completely and ensures a much safer operating environment. Their efficiency also lies in leakage current reduction that benefits users as well as equipment.

Local Lighting Transformer

Characteristics: Primarily used as lighting for commercial and residential purposes only. Typically provides a low output voltage, often 12V or 24V to improve safety and reduce electrical hazards.

Principle: Local lighting transformers work on electromagnetic induction like others do. They reduce the standard line voltage, such as 120V or 240V, to a level that will be used in any type of lighting installation. They use a lower voltage, so the risk of electrical shock is minimized, and they also allow safer, low-voltage lighting fixturing, such as halogen or LED lights. Many of these transformers have short-circuit protection and thermal overload protection to guarantee safe operation.

④ Rectifier Transformer

Characteristics: Specifically designed for DC power application, for instance, welding and electroplating. Especially to match the load’s specific requirements.

Principle: The function of rectifier transformers is to change AC power into DC power. It is normally used in conjunction with a rectifier (diodes or thyristors) in order to supply appropriate voltage to meet the needs of the direct current of the load during the rectification process.

Maximum number of outdoor Low Voltage Transformers

Pole-mounted transformers come in standard sizes with different capacities, such as 30, 50, 80, 100, 125, 200, 250, and 315 KVA. However, for outdoor applications, the maximum capacity is 315 KVA. For most applications, transformers rated 100 KVA and higher require reactive power compensation.

Capacity Calculation:

First, calculate the total installed capacity in KW and the power factor for the factory, taking it normally as 0.8. Formula as under:

Capacity Calculation

· Choose a transformer capacity that exceeds the actual demand by 75% to 95% for optimal economic operation.

③ Power Calculation Formula:

· Using the transformer’s rated voltage (U) and rated current (I), the power can be calculated with:

This applies to three-phase circuits.

Pre-Installation Preparation

Check all installation dimensions of the base; perform unpacking inspection; check whether all accessories have moisture-proof; and transport the transformer to its installed location.

Instalation Process

Install the low voltage transformer on the base and press it well into position before releasing the hooking cable. Use a hoist for installing the transformer to its desired position, grounding wire, and all unmarked red screws.

Safety First: All lifting operations must be supervised and no one should stand under the load until it is secure.

Prevent Tipping: There should not be any tip or crush hazards during lifting and placing. Operatives are always tethered by safety harnesses to robust supports.

Prework Safety Verification Project leader and safety officer should be satisfied that adequate safety facilities are available. In case of inadequacy, workers have the right to refuse work.

Follow Construction Plans: Conduct a safety briefing before work begins, and all participants must sign. Workers should practice self-protection and adhere to the “three no-harm” principle.

Safety Facility Management: Dismantling safety facilities requires permission from the safety officer and should be conducted by qualified personnel.

Night Work: Ensure sufficient lighting during nighttime operations.

Prevent Secondary Pollution: Protect surfaces and equipment from paint and debris during installation.

Waste Disposal: Remove construction waste promptly and ensure the site is clean upon completion.
