What happens if you overload a low voltage transformer

Low voltage transformers provide the basis for stable power. If overloaded, however, serious problems such as overheating and eventual damage can occur. Being aware of the dangers of overloading can save you from many problems and help your transformer function efficiently and safely.

Excessive Heat

Overloading makes the transformer draw more current than its rating, hence excess heat is produced in windings and core. The long-term effect of overheating may be the destruction of insulation, deterioration of the materials of the windings, and probably failure.

Reduced Efficiency

Transformers are designed to operate within specified limits for maximum efficiency. Overloading increases the losses, which include copper and core losses, thereby reducing the efficiency with increased energy waste.

Reduced Life Expectancy

The excessive heating due to overloading results in accelerated aging of the insulation materials, hence a greatly reduced service life of the transformer.

Tripping of Protection Devices

Transformers are normally protected by circuit breakers, fuses, or overload relays. In the case of an overload, such devices may trip in order to prevent further damage.

Voltage Drop

The voltage drop at the output will be very high when overloaded, which can result in malfunctioning or inefficient performance of the connected equipment.

Fire Hazard

Excessive overheating may also lead to a fire if the insulation or other components start burning.

Core Saturation

While not common in a low voltage scenario, overloading can sometimes drive the core into saturation, further gross inefficiencies, and risk of damage.

Choose a transformer whose capacity is sufficient for the intended application.
