What is a relay voltage stabilizer (electronic voltage stabilizer)

Relay voltage stabilizer, also called electronic voltage stabilizer, is a device which automatically switches transformer taps through relays to adjust the output voltage. The automatic tap-changing voltage stabilizer will automatically select the proper tap in accordance with the fluctuation of the input voltage so as to stabilize the output voltage within the set range. It has a simple structure with low cost and belongs to one of the common voltage regulation devices.

Detection of Voltage

The voltage at the input is detected through a voltage sensor or a control circuit and compared with the target value of the output voltage.

Relay Switching

If the input voltage shifts away from the set value, then the control system will act to trigger a relay to switch the transformer tap in order to change the output voltage.

Output Voltage Regulation

Tap switching changes the transformer output voltage to become close to the target value.

Gradual Regulation

The regulation of the relay voltage stabilizer is graded, meaning thereby that the output voltage does not change continuously but in fixed steps. This may cause inaccuracies in the output voltage of about ±10% in some cases.

Simplicity

The design of the relay voltage stabilizer is simple and of low cost.

Step regulation

Through the relay, the tap is switched step by step. So, in general, the accuracy of regulation is low.

Mechanical action

Relays are mechanical switches. Frequent switching will cause mechanical wear and reduce its service life.

Slow adjustment speed

Due to the mechanical characteristics, the speed of relay action is limited and hence cannot catch up with rapid voltage fluctuation.

Suitable for Small Devices

Usually of Low Capacity, Suited to Home Appliances and Small Office Equipment.

Low Costs: Low manufacturing and maintenance costs, suitable for situations with a rather low budget.

Easy Installation and Operation: The design is simple with no complicated debugging.

Lightweight and Compact: Usually, the size and weight are small, hence easy to move and install.

Appropriate for Ordinary Voltage Fluctuations: If there is a voltage fluctuation in small amplitude, then it will do an effective adjustment.

Low precision

The adjustment error of the output voltage is large and it is generally ±8%~±10%, which cannot meet the requirements of high voltage stability of the equipment.

Mechanical wear

The frequent operation of the relay causes contact wear and relatively short service life.

Noise problem

In the process of conversion, the relay will make a “click” sound, which is not suitable for places that require a quiet environment.

Can’t handle rapid fluctuations

The speed of response is slow, and the ability of adaptation to instantaneous voltage fluctuation is poor.

The relay type voltage stabilizers can be applied to small load equipment that does not require high precision voltages, such as:

Household appliances: refrigerator, television, air conditioner, etc.

Small office equipment: computer, printer, etc.

Ordinary commercial equipment: small lamps, electric tools, etc.

Relay type voltage stabilizers belong to a kind of low cost, simple, and easy operating voltage regulation device. It only fits for ordinary voltage stabilization in home and small commercial environment. Due to the low accuracy and poor durability, it is not suitable for industrial equipment or precision instruments with strict voltage requirements.
