What is a grounding transformer and its working principle

A grounding transformer is a special electrical device for neutral point grounding protection in power systems. Its main task is to guide the fault current in the power system to the ground, effectively protecting equipment and personnel from electrical damage. In a normal power system, neutral point grounding is an important measure to improve system reliability. If a fault occurs in the system, the grounding transformer will immediately isolate the live point and direct the fault current to the ground, which can minimize the harm to the human body and equipment.

According to different use places, there are two types of grounding transformers: indoor use and outdoor use. Indoor grounding transformers are mostly suspended and scaffolding types, while outdoor grounding transformers have stronger anti-pollution, insulation and partial discharge performance to fit the outdoor harsh environment.

What is a grounding transformer

It bases its working principle on that of electromagnetic induction. The transformer couples magnetic flux, which adjusts the input voltage before it can be transformed into a lower output voltage. The grounding transformer consists of a primary and secondary coil.

Most of the time, the main coil is connected to a high-voltage power supply, while an output device is coupled to the secondary coil. The iron core serves as the electromagnetic coupling between the primary and the secondary coil: the current flowing in the main coil produces a magnetic field that, in turn, induces an electromotive force in the secondary coil, thereby accomplishing the purpose of voltage reduction.

It is not used only to reduce voltage, but it also plays an important role when a fault current occurs. In case of leakage or short of the equipment, the grounding transformer can rapidly conduct the current into the ground to prevent electrical equipment damage and electric shock accidents. Therefore, it is a core component in the modern power system that guarantees safety and a stable operation of the system.

The grounding transformer provides several functions in the power system, primarily including the following aspects:

Protect personal safety: A grounding transformer can guide the fault current to the ground quickly and thus can prevent current from harming the human body effectively. If leakage or short circuit occurs in the power system, the grounding transformer can guide dangerous current to the ground, by which an electric shock accident can be avoided.

Neutral point of power system: The grounding transformer provides neutral point grounding to the power system and allows the power circuit to operate stably, which ensures normal power supply of the system and improves the reliability of the power system.

Fighting against faults in the power system: once a short circuit, an overload, or any fault occurs in the power system, the grounding transformer can quickly divert the current into the ground and reduce the damage of the fault current to other equipment in the system. In this manner, it provides a safe channel so that no power equipment is damaged and it quickly resumes its normal operation.

Other auxiliary functions: in addition to serving for the creation of an artificial neutral, the grounding transformer can also serve for measuring power parameters-current and voltage-with the purpose of monitoring and managing the power system. It can also decrease electromagnetic interference and increase the stability and reliability of the system.
